Instructions
In a saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Slowly add 1/4 cup of milk to create a smooth paste.
Gradually pour in the remaining milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until it is warm but not boiling.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Pour into mugs, top with marshmallows, whipped cream, or crushed candy canes, and enjoy!
Notes
For a festive twist, add a drop of peppermint or almond extract. For a richer flavor, use a mix of whole milk and heavy cream.
